WHAT DOES IT TAKE AND ARE WE READY?
Is it even possible? Can you really turn failure into achievement? What is it that makes the difference? Why are there some who seem to accomplish so much with their lives? Is it... Family Background - Having a good family growing up is something to be grateful for, but it's not the reliable indicator of accomplishment. High percentages of great men have come from broken homes. Wealth - Some of the greatest men of accomplishment have come from households of average to below-average means. Wealth is not an accurate indicator of high achievement, and poverty is no guarantee of low achievement. Opportunity - Opportunity is a very peculiar thing. Two people with the similar gifts, talents, and resources can look at a situation, and one person will see tremendous opportunity while the other sees nothing. Opportunity is in the eye of the beholder. High Morals - I wish it were that simple and that this were the key, but it's not. I've known people with high morals but were low achievers and I have known scoundrels... rats who were high producers. The Absence of Hardship - For every success who has avoided tragedy, there's a Helen Keller who overcame extreme difficulties or a Viktor Frankl who survived absolute horrors. None of these elements are the key. The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure. Nothing is great in the beginning stages of when God first starts working in a man's life. That man's prayers will be elementary. His efforts will be clumsy and uncoordinated. His whole sense of walking with God will be spent in the shallows. But if that man refuses to give up or if he refuses to give in, if his desire and determination and his sense of purpose will capture his emotions, then God will work with his life. It takes time, persistence, and desire. These elements become the fuel for revivals, energy for relationship with God, and absolute authority in the Kingdom of God.
There are endless ways by which God shapes the soul of a man. • For some all it takes is a look, as with Zacchaeus. Lk 19:2 • For some all it takes is for them to be blinded by light, as with Paul. Acts 9:4 • For some it takes a midnight confrontation, as with Nicodemus. John 3:1 • For some it takes a noonday conversation, as with the women at the well. John 14:4 The only growth worth investing in is that which grows slowly. Great men are made in stages. Not overnight. John Mark started out well Acts 13:13 - did not take the journey well Acts 15:4 - turned back too soon But he learned a lesson and became profitable For the Kingdom of God 2 Tim 4:11 Don’t Quit too soon…continue to pursue God

JONAH’S GREAT QUESTIONS FOR US 1. Have you ever felt sorry For Yourself? 4:1-3
II. Have You Ever Been Mad at God? 4:4-9
III. Has God Ever Taught You a Tough Lesson? 4:10-11
Jonah was about to learn a big lesson that wasn’t going to be easy to swallow. In fact, we’re not even sure he got it, because the book ends without telling us if he finally understood.
The book of Jonah teaches us that it’s time to quit thinking so much about ourselves and what we want and to focus more on the needs of those outside the church that God has called us to reach. Perhaps the final question meant for us to answer when we read Jonah is. . .
"Do I see a little Jonah in myself?"
“JONAH – IN US” Part1 July 26, 2009
Jonah 1:1-4 12-17
The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. Jonah 1:1-3
“JONAH – IN US” a Series Pt 1
The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. Jonah 1:1-3
JONAH: KNOWN AS “THE RELUCTANT PROPHET.” HIS NAME MEANS DOVE.
AMITTAI: MEANS TRUTH.
NINEVAH: CAPITAL OF ASSYRIA. NINEVEH WAS ISRAEL’S WORST ENEMY.
LIFE’S STORMS CAN LEAD YOU DOWN DANGEROUS PATHS
1/ GOD WILL OFTEN ASK YOU TO DO THINGS YOU DON’T W_______________ TO DO. "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." Jonah 1:2
2) YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND A BOAT SAILING IN THE W__________________ DIRECTION. But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. Jonah 1:3
3) GOD MAY SEND A STORM TO GRAB YOU’RE A______________. Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. Jonah 1:4
"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you." Jonah 1:12
4) JONAH’S WORST NIGHTMARE WAS EXACTLY WHAT HE N_________________. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him. But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. Jonah 1:15-17
Jonah,“the Preaching Prophet .. Aug 2, 2009
Jonah 3:1-3:10
Jonah, “the Preaching Prophet” Jonah 3:1-3:10
Jonah, “the Preaching Prophet” Jonah 3:1-3:10
Evangelism is a program originated by God.
1/ Jonah is re commissioned Jonah 3 Ninevah was a great and important city Jonah had every right to be afraid Perhaps his preaching was only negative Maybe Jonah needed to see the positive 2/ Jonah faces his options Jonah 3:9 Being “prophetic” often means telling people things they don’t care to hear. Obeying God can be challenging if we have a need to be liked.
verse 9: “Who knows? God may yet relent, and with compassion turn from His burning anger so that we shall not perish.”
WHY 40 days ?
The 40 days of rain for Noah’s ark was a time of washing away the moral pollution of generations;
The 40 years wandering in the wilderness was Israel being trained to live by the promises and guidance of God;
Elijah’s 40 days on the run from Jezebel prepared him for God’s reassurance;
Jesus’ 40 days of temptation and 40 days of resurrection appearances verified both the Messenger and His message.
We learn the response of the city in verses 5-10. It wasn’t what we might have expected, nor hardly what Jonah desired.
The people accept Jonah’s message, believing that its Author had the power to carry out this threat. Ninevah worshipped a fish-god, and learning that Jonah was rescued by a great fish had to make a big impact on them. They were ready to believe his message, and like it or not, Jonah helped bring about one of the largest mass conversions in history.
The king (Ninevah was the capitol city of the Assyrian empire) proclaims a period of prayer and fasting in sackcloth and ashes. Even the livestock are included.
3/ Jonah deals with true change
It’s too easy to confess and forget; true repentance means inward renewal, a spiritual/moral transformation.
Charles Spurgeon wrote,
“If Hell must be filled, let it not possess one soul which was unprayed for, unimplored, or unwarned.”
If God can use Jonah, He can use us to deliver His message of warning and mercy and divine love.
It is a loving God who reaches down from heaven, to talk to us, to give us the options and who overlooks every sin and brings us to himself.
